Cyclo-cross

Cyclo-cross is a type of cycle racing that road cyclists do in the winter. It is similar to a mountain bike race but less... mountainous. Competitors can choose to race on a mountain bike or a purpose built cyclo-cross bike. A cyclo-cross bike is similar to a road racing bike, but is usually stronger, has greater clearance between the wheels and frame to prevent build-up of mud. The front chain rings are positioned higher to prevent snagging and centre-pull brakes are preferred.

A cyclo-cross race is usually run over an off-road circuit incorporating fast open land and more technical obstacles. The rules dictate that at least one of the obstacles must cause the rider to dismount and climb over it, like a large tree trunk.

The race is run for 50 minutes. When the first rider crosses the finish line the last lap bell is run and all riders simply have to complete the lap they are currently on which means the leader has one more lap to do.
